Oct. 19 Event Benefits Orland Township Scholarship Foundation; Contestants Required to Gather for Meet and Greet on Sept.5
Orland Township will soon host the sixth annual Dancing with the Senior Stars, a performance competition and fundraiser that features contestants vying before judges and a live audience in the style of “Dancing with the Stars.” But while the popular event showcases the talent of local senior citizens, this year there’s a twist: each senior citizen will be paired on the dance floor with a high school senior.
Dancing with the Senior Stars is among a range of intergenerational programs and events Orland Township produces to help enhance and enrich residents’ lives. It’s an opportunity to bring families together for a fun evening and help raise funds to support students pursuing higher education.
“We’re excited to re-imagine this event to spotlight the dancing flair among both of our ‘senior’ communities,” said Orland Township Supervisor Paul O’Grady. “Dancing With the Senior Stars always makes for an entertaining time and it benefits a very worthy cause.”
The winning student and senior citizen will receive, respectively, a $1,000 college scholarship and a cash prize. Participating students also will earn service hours. Proceeds benefit the Orland Township Scholarship Foundation, which provides scholarships to high school seniors based on academic achievement and community service.
Contestants will gather for a meet and greet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept.5, at Arthur Murray Dance Studio, 16131 S. LaGrange Road, Orland Park. Thereafter, professional dancers will, through a series of lessons, provide instruction to each contestant team. The event will occur at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at Georgios Banquets, 8800 W. 159th St., Orland Park.
